How should one take care of a felony bench warrant that was issued while he was out of the country?

my cousin was out on probation for marijuana charges, got a permit from the judge to visit his ailing father in Chile, and then missed the deadline to come back to the states. he later received an e-mail from his lawyer saying that a felony bench warrant was issued for him. he was so scared that he stayed out of the country for over a year. now he misses america so much that he wants to come back and face the consequences. naturally he wants to avoid any jail term if possible. but i wonder, is that even possible at this point? wouldn't he be apprehended at the airport no matter what state he lands in? and whats the best and the worst case scenario for him regarding jail time?
